Building a rapport with Ashley feels easy. Through her relationship with her clients, Ashley supports transformation and sustainable change. Some of the processes will look like focusing on the here and now in a solution-focused way. Some of the processes might involve looking at how patterns that have been around awhile got there, and how to shift into some new and more effective patterns in life and relationships.
As a Black Woman, Ashley understands how cultural identity shapes our self-perceptions, our self-esteem, and our sense of our place in the world. Working with Ashley means getting the opportunity to understand how your identity frames and shapes the challenges that you are struggling with. Whether it be cultural identity, gender identity, sexual identity, able-ism, or other diversity in identity. How we see and understand ourselves shades in the context of the challenges and experiences that we all face.
Caring Individual Counseling
Ashley is also well versed in supporting lasting resolutions for old hurts, traumas, and/or PTSD. Here’s the thing...our brains are wired for survival. At certain points along the way, we learn to do things a certain way to survive. In life, in relationships, and in the world. Once these strategies work, our brain thinks that they are a good way to keep us safe. But in truth, they get outdated pretty quickly. So many times clients might say, “I just can’t stop thinking about this!” or, “I can’t sleep!”, or “I’m sleeping all the time to avoid the thoughts or feelings.” When our brains get stuck in survival mode, we live in a state of hypervigilance, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Often this can feel like never feeling safe in your environment, your relationships, or never feeling safe in your own body. Ashley can help you resolve the old patterns while learning more effective coping skills and strategies. Getting support for old or new hurts means feeling safer and more comfortable in the present.
Some of the approaches Ashley uses in her work with her teen and adult clients include: Mindfulness practices along with DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Approaches, and Motivational Interviewing.
Some of the areas Ashley specializes in include:
- Managing life transitions (grief and loss, separation/breakup/divorce, lost job/new job)
- Increasing self-esteem and positive healthy relationships
- When bad/hard things have happened (support for trauma and PTSD)
- Anxiety and Depression for teens and adults
- Co-occurring disorders: struggles with mental health and substance use
- Anger Management, learning how to de-escalate effectively.
Counseling for Teens
In her work with teens, Ashley quickly becomes an ally for her teen clients and a support for the whole family. In allowing space to explore struggles and challenges outside the family system, Ashley can support perspective-taking, and help in building new skills and strategies for managing big emotions, and experiences. While Ashley’s work may center on the teen, she encourages family support as well. Frequently you as the parent may feel overwhelmed and not sure how to effectively support the places your teen is struggling. With Ashley’s help, you can all have an ally and coach to help learn and build healthier and more effective relationships within your family.
