What to Look for in a Therapist

When you’ve decided to attend therapy and start working with someone new, the possibilities can feel daunting.

We recognize you have many options for counseling in Federal Way, which is why we believe you must find a therapist and support team with whom you feel completely comfortable and ready to work with for the long term.

To help guide you in your decision-making process, we’ve compiled a list of our suggestions of things to consider when choosing a new therapist:

Do They Offer Online Counseling?

As we continue to navigate the culture of a post-COVID-19 world, many of us are still more comfortable meeting virtually and attending appointments from our homes.

One of the major factors for you to consider may be whether potential therapists offer telehealth appointments so you can maintain social distancing and fit therapy into your busy schedule without having to commute.

At Thrive Counseling Center, we offer both in-person and online counseling sessions for your convenience.

What Types of Therapy Do They Offer?

Not every therapist specializes in every type of treatment, and that’s okay! If you’re looking specifically for a marriage and family therapist or someone who works well with neurodiverse children, you should only consider counseling practices that can meet your specific needs.

Many counseling offices will offer various sessions, ranging from group therapy to family counseling to individual meetings.

Does Their Schedule Fit With Mine?

The working world has become more flexible and less dependent on the typical 9 to 5 schedule that existed before the COVID-19 pandemic, and you may find yourself now working from home, working longer hours, or even working in a different field than you were only a year or two ago.

When searching for a new therapist, make sure you choose someone whose schedule is compatible with your own. Our Federal Way counselors see clients from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and we also have weekend availability if that is best for your lifestyle.

Can I Schedule a Consultation With a Therapist Near Me?

Finally, always ensure that the therapists you’re looking at are actually accepting new clients and can schedule a consultation right away. Some counseling practices will fill up and not accept new patients from time to time, so always check the practice's website or reach out via telephone to ensure you’re not wasting your time.
