Finding a trusting and affordable therapist can feel like a daunting task, especially if you need emotional support. But working with a counselor or therapist you connect with can make a huge difference in your experience with therapy, especially if you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), LGBTQ+ individuals face numerous health disparities due to discrimination. As a result, people may avoid or delay seeking mental healthcare treatment. LGBTQ+ is not a mental disorder, but sexual and gender minority people can face stress and devaluation that can cause anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.
What Is Affirmative Therapy?
At Thrive Counseling, we are LGBTQ+ allies, or “affirmative therapists,” who nurture and support self-acceptance and authenticity. We provide a safe and open space where our clients can feel comfortable communicating about their experiences. The goal of LGBTQ+ counseling is to offer support and guidance with whatever the client would like to explore. Having a mental healthcare provider who understands LGBTQ+ identities, experiences, and systemic barriers can be tremendously helpful and encouraging.
What to Expect at an Affirmative Therapy Session
Affirmative therapists do not attempt to alter someone’s gender or sexual identities or expression. First and foremost, we understand sexual and gender minorities are normal and valid, not a deviation.
During a LGBTQ+ therapy session with an affirming therapist, a client can talk about anything they want––from anxiety about work to their relationships with others or themselves. Everyone is unique, so every session and client is unique. There’s no one-size-fits-all formula for therapy sessions; we are here for you and your individual therapy goals.
At Thrive Counseling, we want our clients to truly thrive and live their most authentic lives. We strive to always uphold a nurturing and positive environment where our clients feel supported in what they want to achieve and heal what they want to heal.
