Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Psychological Assessment and Evaluation

How can we help you?

At Thrive Counseling Center we strive to be transparent about the process of counseling.

We know that counseling is something that a lot of people feel hesitant to talk about, and resistant to share their experiences, which can lead to confusion and a lot of unknowns about the process. Especially if this is your first time considering working with a therapist.

Our goal is to demystify the counseling process and help you understand how counseling works.

Below are some of the most common questions we are asked and some answers to get you started.  If you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact us by email, or give us a call.

Psychological Assessment and Evaluation

Many people are intimidated by a psychological assessment. There is no need to be nervous. You're not interviewing for anything or defending yourself. There is nothing to be afraid of. The path to recovery from a disorder through treatment starts here.

The First Visit for Psychological Assessment

Expect your first appointment to last an hour or two. During that time, the discussion with the counselor will cover many different subjects to help them assess the patient's mental state. Some of the questions the patient might get asked about:

  • The medication, or any substances the patient uses, if any.
  • Your medical history as it relates to things that can affect the patient's mental state, such as head injuries.
  • The concerns you or others have about the patient's health and happiness. These assessments can help diagnose some disorders like PTSD, ADD, and depression.
  • Any important questions the patient has, the symptoms they might be experiencing or feelings they are having.

By the end of the assessment, the counselor will have recommendations, and together with the patient, they will decide the best next steps.
