Dr. Leilani Ordway, PhD
Leilani works with our:
"I really want my clients to feel empowered. My goal for my clients is to build up the tools to create longstanding skills and long lasting change."
Dr. Leilani Ordway brings over 20 years of experience to her work with adults, couples, families, and teens. With Leilani's support, you will develop a road map specific to moving through and past what you are currently struggling with.
Leilani's experience with both civilian and military populations has molded her approach into one that is a no-nonsense direct approach. With her support you can start to understand the why of how you feel, and then effectively develop strategies and solutions to feel better within your life and relationships.
At the heart of Dr. Ordway's work with her clients is a deep understanding of how the brain is wired, how it responds to stress, and how this often feels like it doesn't work in your favor! When the brain is under stress, we develop compensatory mechanisms, which, while working in the short term, rarely work for the long term. The brain gets a bit "stuck" in these operations and struggles to adapt to a new way of operating which messes with how we feel and how we think. This process can bring on feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, difficulty in being around other people, struggles showing up in our relationships, and challenges with sleep to name a few. With Leilani's help, you can retrain and rewire your brain to come back to the present, and operate more effectively in your life and relationships.
Leilani will work with you to develop a plan of action and support that will include approaches that are tailored to your specific goals. Some of her go to approaches are: Bio-psycho-social model, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) for individuals and couples, systems therapy, behavioral activation, Sleep and Nightmare Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
Working with Adults
Equipped with the understanding of how the brain wraps itself around stressful experiences and events, Leilani is in a unique place to help you if you are struggling with adjusting to change, or making a change.
Change is one of the things that is hardest for the brain and associated emotions to process, which is part of what makes it so hard! Brain-based, and trauma-informed approaches are critical to help you move through the changes you are facing with more ease.
Some of the types of change Leilani supports her clients through whether they are initiating the changes or are struggling to manage response to change:
- Changes in health of self or loved one
- Changes in marriages/relationships
- Changes in family relationships and/or blended families
- Experiencing loss of a family member or friend
- Change as a result of trauma, and/or experiencing PTSD
- Changes or shifts in job/career
Working with couples
Dr. Ordway again brings her knowledge and brain based awareness to her work with couples. As you know if you are in a relationship, change (or wanting something to change) is one of the most challenging obstacles in a marriage/relationship. Over time, relationships can struggle when the habitual relational dynamics are not able to support the changes that happen in life. As people and situations change, so does the requirement for the relationship to shift.
Leilani frequently sees communication breakdowns surrounding this process of change happening, and also when change that one or both partners want that is NOT happening! Coming into counseling means building a healthy relationship that can grow and bend to make space for each person individually as well as what the relationship needs. If you are struggling to find this within your marriage or relationship, it may be time to consider getting some support from Dr. Ordway.
Some frequent couples challenges that Dr. Ordway works with:
- Increased effective communication
- Navigating changes in one person or in both
- Desire for a more intimate and connected marriage/relationship
- Support for couples living with trauma and/or PTSD
- Military couple support
- Intentional dismantling of a marriage: how to part amicably
Support for teens and their parents
Leilani's approach for teens and their families centers on the development of a strong therapeutic relationship. Working from a strengths based approach, she helps teens who struggle to see and know their strengths. Providing a safe place to explore emotions, experiences, however hard leads to self-understanding and increased self-esteem. In working collaboratively with families as well the entire family system can heal, not only just the client.
Dr. Ordway frequently works with teens who are struggling with:
- Feelings like anger, sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm
- Big changes in their lives
- Trauma and/or PTSD
- Loss and Grief
