Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Substance Use and Dependency Professional Trainee

Feeling disconnected from what you thought life would look like?

Are you struggling with feelings that your life is not in alignment with your beliefs and values?

Do you feel disconnected from your relationship, your family, or even yourself?

When your life (or those of your family members) doesn't feel in line with what you had hoped for or what you value, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start to get things going in a better direction.

Working with Kiersten means getting down to the brass tacks and working on the essentials to address what’s getting in your way.  With effective goal setting and a supportive approach to guide you through the therapeutic process, Kiersten can help you discover how to live your life (or how to support your kids) in alignment with your core beliefs and values.

Experience Working With Teens and Young Adults

While Kiersten works with our kiddo clients as well as with our adult clients, one area Kiersten is exceptionally skilled in is working with teens.  Kiersten embodies a warm sense of compassion that is evident from even the first few minutes sitting in the room with her.  Adults and teens alike feel comfortable working on the hard stuff with her.

Kiersten’s experience leading backpacking trips for teens living with grief and loss of a loved one puts her in a unique position to understand teens from the perspective of having worked with and lived with teens around the clock on these excursions.

Her teen savvy approach to counseling puts teens at ease, and she is able to offer a window of support that helps not only the teen, but the whole family system.  She understands the frustration that teens and young adults experience when they feel like everyone is telling them what to do.  In a collaborative and supportive fashion, Kiersten will work with her teen/young adult clients to develop goals that are meaningful to their lives as well as those of their family, to increase a sense of satisfaction and also self-esteem.  Kiersten acts from a place of support and of being an ally to her teens and families alike.  This means that she's a professional who can walk alongside teens and young adults without telling them what to do, or pushing them, all the while helping the family unit to function more effectively.

Some of the approaches Kiersten uses include CBT, mindfulness therapy, brain-based science for understanding emotions and experiences, EMDR, and narrative and humanistic approaches to understanding our stories.

Some of the areas Kiersten supports teens, young adults, and their families:

  • Grief and loss, finding ways to move forward
  • Depression: struggling to find joy, dropping grades, isolation, changing friends
  • Anxiety: worry, panic attacks, overwhelm, fear of loved ones dying
  • Social awkwardness
  • Supporting healthy gender and/or sexual identity
  • Bullying/teasing

Counseling for Adults

Kiersten also works with our adult clients who are struggling to carry the weight of anxiety, depression, or the experience of grief and loss.  Supporting her adult clients means diving in and providing immediate tools to help in feeling comfortable in the midst of what's going on.  From there, Kiersten walks alongside her clients on the path of self-understanding of how to move through and forward with their lives.

Some of the challenges Kiersten's clients frequently work with her on include:

  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Grief and Loss
  • Trauma and PTSD (from the past or the present)
  • Helping with breakups or relational challenges
  • Patterns of Codependency.
  • Neurodevelopmental Disabilities or adults living with Autism Spectrum Disorders
